Library Associate

Part Time 10-20 Hours per week

Job Description

Position Objectives

Under the supervision of the Library Director, the Library Associate performs and is responsible for and varied clerical library services. Duties include the circulation of library materials, clerical-administrative work, assisting patrons in using library services, equipment and facilities, and assisting with library programs. The Library Associate works as a team player with coworkers.

Hours: Works a schedule that includes days, evenings and Saturdays.

Typical Duties:

Duties include the following:

  • Provides friendly, high-quality customer service to library patrons.
  • Performs library opening and/or closing tasks.
  • Assists library patrons in use of materials.
  • Assists with operation of public computer terminals.
  • Performs copying, faxing and printing services on an as-needed basis.
  • Responds to requests for information and assistance, or refers inquiries to a professional librarian.
  • Responds to routine questions regarding library rules, hours of operation and location of materials.
  • Charges and discharges library books, materials, and equipment.
  • Inspects returned books, materials and equipment for damage.
  • Follows prescribed routine in receiving compensation for overdue, damaged or lost library items.
  • Sorts and shelves materials.
  • Maintains the book sale area in orderly condition as necessary.
  • Assists new patrons in applying for library membership and processes new patron registrations.
  • Assists with library programs.
  • Oversees the general condition and appeal of the library and its displays.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: H.S. Diploma or GED.

Preferred Qualifications: Associates Degree, previous public library work experience

Starting Wage: Hourly, starting a Minimum Wage

Library Director - Rensselaerville Library, Albany County, NY

The Board of Trustees of the Rensselaerville Library seeks a community-minded, organized and enthusiastic individual for the position of Library Director.

The Rensselaerville Library is an association library that serves the 1,860 residents of the Town of Rensselaerville. It is housed within a charming historic row home in the hamlet of Rensselaerville, a designated state and national historic district located 25 miles southwest of Albany, New York. The library's operating budget of $146,000 is funded by contributions from the Town of Rensselaerville, local school district taxes, fundraisers, and donations from the community. In addition to the director, the library employs four part-time employees: an assistant director, youth services coordinator, and two support staff.

An ideal candidate will be a welcoming person with strong interpersonal skills, demonstrated ability for effective public engagement and a passion for the importance of libraries in our communities.

Working closely with our supportive Board of Trustees, the Library Director develops policies, engages in long-term planning, creates public relations materials, maintains and enhances our online and social media presence, develops and manages the budget, supervises staff and volunteers, oversees the physical plant, and stays informed of developments in library management.

Desired Skills:

  • Excellent writing skills, including demonstrated ability to initiate, write and administer grant applications
  • Knowledge of current library management practices and ability to manage library collections and programs to meet the evolving needs of the community.
  • Understanding of general building maintenance tasks and ability to work with contractors and other building maintenance professionals
  • Ability to help patrons answer technology questions and to ensure that technology in the library is up to date and functioning properly
  • Fundraising experience and the ability to provide guidance and expertise to the board to improve fundraising efforts
  • Human resource management skills, including hiring, payroll, and performing staff evaluations
  • Experience with funds management procedures and budgeting

Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Master of Library Science degree and New York certificate of librarianship is desired but not essential.

The position is based on a 35-hr work week, with nights and weekends as needed. Salary range is $31,000-$44,000, with compensation based on education and experience. Benefits include paid time off and professional development funds.

Job Opening: Custodial Worker (Part-Time)

Description:
The East Greenbush Community Library currently has opening(s) for part-time Custodial Worker(s), which includes meeting room set ups.

Hourly Wage: $12.75 per hour

Typical Schedule:

The normal work schedule includes weekend hours. Some flexibility is required; schedule may include daytime, evening, and/or weekend hours.

Qualifications:

Training

  • Some experience in custodial work, is preferred but not mandatory.

License/Certifications

  • Valid NYS motor vehicle operator's license during term of employment.
  • Must be eligible for a provisional appointment as Custodial Worker under civil service rules.

  Upper Hudson Library System Celebrates Public Libraries Making a Difference in Their Communities

Albany, NY (June 13) -- The Upper Hudson Library System held its 58th annual celebration of public library service in Albany and Rensselaer Counties at the Holiday Inn Express in Latham, NY on Wednesday, June 12. UHLS Board President Tara Ricard said, “The public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer Counties are changing lives every day and the Upper Hudson Library System celebrates this transformative work through our annual celebration and awards program.”

At the event the following awards were presented:

2018 Library Trustee of the Year Award
Presented to Christopher Aldrich – Guilderland Public Library

For the past nine years, Chris has provided strong and steady counsel and leadership to the library and the Board. Serving in all of the major roles of a Trustee, including Board President, he has also served as Chair of the Budget and Audit Committee, the Finance Committee, the Fundraising committee, two Labor Contract negotiation teams, and a Library Director search committee. But perhaps his most important contribution to his library was realized on May 21st of this year when the community voted to fund an $8.35 million library capital project that will expand the library’s youth services area and community meeting space to ensure that the library will be able to meet the community’s needs into the future. Chris served as the Chair of the Library’s Design Steering Committee for this transformative project. The Upper Hudson Library System honors Chris Aldrich for his dedicated work to ensure that the Guilderland Public Library will continue to make a positive difference in the community.


2018 Library Volunteer of the Year Award
Presented to Margaret Pine – Cheney Library (Hoosick Falls)

A long-time volunteer at the Cheney Library, Margaret has taken an active leadership role in organizing and managing several different areas of the library. When the library built their new Children’s room, Margaret led a project to reorganize, relabel, and improve access to all of the children’s collections. She then turned her attention to the library’s recently completed multi-purpose room, where she once again used her organizations skills to find places for all of the library’s “stuff’. Along with these major projects, Margaret has also been the spark plug for Cheney’s ongoing book sale, ensuring the success of this important source of financial support for the library. The Upper Hudson Library System honors Margaret Pine for being an outstanding exemplar of volunteer service to her library and her community.

2018 Adult Library Program of the Year Award
Presented to the Brunswick Community Library for “Adults with Special Needs Program Series”

The Brunswick Library staff identified a need in their community – to provide warm and welcoming activities specifically for adults with special needs. They partnered with local community organizations to provide the necessary training for the library staff. They selected the programming – health and fitness with chair yoga sessions; and sensory crafts with watercolor painting and sculpture classes. The program was an immediate success, both in terms of bringing new people into the library and in making a meaningful difference in the lives of the participants. To quote from the nomination letter: “For patrons with special needs, feeling like other community members know and care about them can be a huge emotional support. What is a simple class to library staff might be the highlight of the week for a patron who spends most of their time by themselves. I now see smiling faces, as many of these once shy people come into the library on a regular basis, knowing that this is a place for them.” The Upper Hudson Library System commends the Brunswick Community Library for providing a wonderful example of truly inclusive and impactful library programming for an important part of their community.

2018 Youth and Family Library Program of the Year Award
Presented to the Arvilla E. Diver Memorial Library (Schaghticoke) for “Let’s Make a Song!”

This multi-week summer program, which was a collaboration between the library and the local school band director, guided kids through the process of writing music and lyrics….and making their own songs! Using the library’s book collection as a source for inspiration and ideas, the participants wrote original songs, and with the help of an audio engineer, recorded their own CD! The kids were interviewed on a local radio station and from that publicity and the CD sales, the library received enough donations to fund the program for another year! The program made a real difference for the participants. To quote from the nomination letter: “You could feel a change in them…the kids were more confident and more willing to try new things after writing their own songs. They were emboldened.” The Upper Hudson Library System commends the Arvilla E. Diver Memorial Library for a uniquely creative program which provided positive artistic, educational, and empowerment opportunities for young people in their community.


In addition to a framed certificate, each award winner will receive a cash award for their home library to help support future community building efforts. “We are very pleased to be able recognize the wonderful programs happening in our libraries and the passionate and dedicated people who are doing this important work. Our member libraries are all making a real and positive difference in their communities every day,” said UHLS Executive Director Tim Burke.

UHLS was also very pleased to honor New York Library Association Executive Director Jeremy Johannesen. UHLS presented him with the UHLS William Meredith Library Advocate Award. The full award citation read as follows:

“The Upper Hudson Library System honors New York Library Association Executive Director Jeremy Johannesen for his dedicated and distinguished service to New York State’s library community. Since becoming Executive Director of NYLA in 2012, Jeremy has worked tirelessly to increase funding for all types of libraries throughout New York State and has advocated for changes to laws and regulations that improves library services statewide. Under his leadership, the New York library community has received more than $615 Million dollars in state aid to libraries and public libraries have received $113 million dollars in construction aid. Jeremy has developed a robust program of professional development and continuing education for library staff, library advocates, and library trustees, improving the essential skills that help all libraries provide better service to their communities, campuses, and classrooms. The centerpiece of this program is the annual NYLA Conference which is one of the largest and best attended statewide library conferences in the nation. The Upper Hudson Library System honors Jeremy Johannesen for his extraordinary efforts on behalf of New York’s libraries. By his actions, he has made a real and positive difference in the lives of all New Yorkers.”

BOOKKEEPING HELP WANTED:

Part-time bookkeeper with proficiency in QuickBooks and other commonly used accounting tools. Applicant should have a minimum of two years of experience with QuickBooks and be familiar with fund accounting, budgeting and the workings of a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Knowledge of public library operations a plus. Approximately 3-4 hours per week for duties such as regular billing, preparation of materials for board meetings and attendance (as requested) at library committee and board meetings, and annual budget planning sessions.

Upper Hudson Library System Celebrates Public Libraries Making a Difference in Their Communities

Albany, NY (June 20, 2018) -- The Upper Hudson Library System held its 57th annual celebration of public library service in Albany and Rensselaer Counties at the Hilton Garden Inn in Troy, NY on Tuesday, June 19. UHLS Board President Tara Ricard said, "The public libraries in Albany and Rensselaer Counties are changing lives every day and the Upper Hudson Library System celebrates this transformative work through our annual celebration and awards program."

2017 Library Volunteer of the Year Award

Presented to Ed Languish - Westerlo Public Library


When the Westerlo Public Library had the opportunity to expand into space formerly housing a local museum, Ed Languish stepped up to help. When a generous community benefactor came forward to provide the financial resources to complete the library's transformation, Ed took over. He was the designer, project manager and hands-on constructor for this major renovation project for the library…and he did it all as a volunteer! He guided the library through the design process, helped with grant applications, and assembled the construction team. He not only did the work, but more importantly, he inspired the library to think big and helped demonstrate to the community that dreams can come true.


2017 Library Volunteer of the Year Award

Presented to Jackson Murphy - East Greenbush Community Library


Local celebrity, film critic, NY Emmy award winner, Jackson Murphy has been giving back to his library for the last five years - since he was in high school! Now a college student, he has been responsible for an impressive list of successful library programming for the East Greenbush Community Library, including monthly movie screenings, movie trivia nights, and his signature event, The Day Before the Awards Film Festival. Jackson organizes and presents all of these programs for the library. He brings an experienced and knowledgeable perspective to the discussions and leverages his extensive connections in the film industry to enhance the programs.


2017 Library Trustee of the Year Award

Presented to Kevin Moran, Tina Buonaiuto, David Wheatley, and Tracy Wheatley - Watervliet Public Library


As trustees for the Watervliet Public Library, Kevin, Tina, David and Tracey secured the future of library service in their community by spearheading a campaign that led to a successful public vote on library funding. In the first ever public vote on library funding in the city's history, voters approved a secure annual operating budget of $150,000, almost four times more than the previous annual municipal appropriation. The new budget allowed the library to expand programming for children and adults, increase hours, strengthen broadband/wi-fi capability, and increase library staffing. These trustees, many of who have served for more than a decade, have created a secure future for library service in their community.


2017 Adult Library Program of the Year Award

Presented to the Bethlehem Public Library for "The Federalist Papers"

The Federalist Papers series was created in response to the current fascination with all things related to Alexander Hamilton, the history of the founding of our nation, and the timely concept of checks and balances in government. Supported by a grant from Humanities, NY, the series included four programs with noted humanities scholar Giacomo Calabria, who guided the audience through some of the most important and influential essays from the Federalist canon. The programs were very well attended, with patrons frequently commenting on the timeliness of the discussion. The Federalist Papers series encouraged community members to engage in exactly the kind of civil intellectual discourse that the country's founding fathers envisioned for a free society and also served as a valuable reminder of why and how our government was created in the first place.


2017 Youth and Family Library Program of the Year Award

Presented to the Bethlehem Public Library for "Rubber Ducky Club"


The Rubber Ducky Club is an ongoing educational program for newborns through kindergarten that lets parents and children work together to grow in all of the basic early literacy skills - reading, writing, talking, singing and playing - with fun and prizes along the way! Through the special Rubber Ducky events throughout the year; and at every storytime, activity, or visit to the library; children and their caregivers tracked "early literacy moments" building toward the goal of 1,000 moments before kindergarten. Focused on the many ways young children learn through simple acts of talking, sharing, and reading, the program models early learning in relation to school readiness and lifelong learning. Since its launch in May of 2017, the library has recorded more than 18,000 early literacy moments.


In addition to a framed certificate, each award winner received a cash award for their home library to help support future community building efforts. "We are very pleased to be able recognize the wonderful things happening in our libraries. They are all making a real and positive difference in their communities every day," said UHLS Executive Director Tim Burke.

UHLS was also very pleased to honor former NY State Librarian Bernard A. Margolis, who recently passed away. UHLS presented his wife with the UHLS William Meredith Library Advocate Award. The full award citation read as follows:

"As the New York State Librarian and Assistant Commissioner for Libraries, Bernard A. Margolis was a true champion of libraries. He provided strong and effective leadership and vision for the New York State Library, the state's 73 library systems, and New York's 7,000 academic, public, school and special libraries. He tirelessly advocated for increased state support of public libraries, resulting in a growth in state funding for public library construction from $14 million to $34 million a year during his tenure. He championed library services for New York's youngest citizens, growing participation in Summer Reading at New York's Libraries to an all-time high of 2.2 million readers in 2017. He fought for increased digital access for all New Yorkers resulting in all of New York's public libraries being able to offer free public internet access and Wi-Fi to all library users. Bernard A. Margolis was 'the voice of libraries' in New York State."

UHLS Libraries Get Mobile App

We've got a brand new way to access library resources! Public libraries in Albany & Rensselaer counties now offer an app called UHLS Mobile, available for free in both Android and Apple app stores.

The app features include the ability to search the UHLS catalog; check the status of a library card account; place physical items (such as books, CDs and DVDs) on hold so they can be picked up at the library; discover and access digitally distributed items like ebooks, audiobooks, and digital magazines; and connect users to other information such as library hours and program calendars. The app even can scan the ISBN barcode of any book to see whether our libraries own a copy of a specific title—and place a request for that book right away. CORE Trustee Training Program now available to all UHLS member libraries

UHLS is pleased to announce that our new CORE Trustee Training program is now available for all member library trustees. This program is a 90 minute session that covers the fundamentals of being a library trustee, including roles and responsibilities, NYS minimum library standards, oaths of office, open meetings law, board/director roles, etc. The program also emphasizes the CORE values of Community, Openness, Respect, and Ethics as they relate to the work of a library trustee.

This program is valuable for all currently serving library trustees regardless of their tenure on their board. There is real added value from having all of a library's trustees share the experience together (common ground understanding of these fundamentals, encouraging mentoring of newer trustees by the "old hands", etc.). UHLS also recommends that the Library Director be included when a member library hosts the program to encourage that same common ground understanding between the Library Board and the Director.

The CORE Trustee Training has been designed to be an "on demand" program that can be conducted at member libraries at a date and time that is most convenient for trustees to come together.
