This conference is designed to be a drop-in program, so please feel free to log on or stop by based on what interests you in the conference program (which is also at the more details link below).

If you think you or anyone else from your library might attend at UHLS please RSVP to Tim Burke (tim.burke@uhls.lib.ny.us) before 2/28/12.

Conference Description:

We've been listening! A comment we've heard pretty often is that so many presentations at conferences seem to be by and for librarians from larger libraries. Well, Big Talk From Small Libraries will change that. This free one-day online conference is aimed at librarians from small libraries; the smaller the better. Each of our eight speakers is from a small library or directly works with small libraries. Topics will range from technology (new tech and old tech) to programming to new roles for the library. Eight presenters means eight hourly slots and eight topics. Come for the programs on what you're dealing with now or maybe try something new.

Everyone is welcome to register and attend, regardless of how big or small their library is, but if your library serves a few thousand people, or a few hundred, this is the day for you. Big Talk From Small Libraries will be broadcast online using the GoToWebinar online meeting service. GoToWebinar login instructions will be e-mailed to registered attendees the day before the conference. This conference was organized and is hosted by Michael Sauers and Laura Johnson of the Nebraska Library Commission and is co-sponsored by the Association for Small & Rural Libraries and Library Renewal. UHLS Youth Services Blog

Announcing a new UHLS youth services blog! We’re introducing a new way of communicating about youth services within UHLS. For member library staff serving kids, tweens, teens ,and families, this blog takes the place of the kids and teen wikis and adds to the communication tools of youthserv, kidbytes, and the UHLS website.

Here you'll find announcements of training and youth services meetings, YSAC minutes, and other news relevant to your work. We'll continue to use email too as we determine what array of communication tools works best for us.

You're invited and encouraged to reply to posts. As staff of a member library, you are also invited to create original posts. Just contact Mary Fellows (mary@uhls.lib.ny.us), who can add you as a contributor. Comments, questions, and suggestions for useful content enthusiastically encouraged!

CORE Trustee Training Program now available to all UHLS member libraries

UHLS is pleased to announce that our new CORE Trustee Training program is now available for all member library trustees. This program is a 90 minute session that covers the fundamentals of being a library trustee, including roles and responsibilities, NYS minimum library standards, oaths of office, open meetings law, board/director roles, etc. The program also emphasizes the CORE values of Community, Openness, Respect, and Ethics as they relate to the work of a library trustee.

This program is valuable for all currently serving library trustees regardless of their tenure on their board. There is real added value from having all of a library's trustees share the experience together (common ground understanding of these fundamentals, encouraging mentoring of newer trustees by the "old hands", etc.). UHLS also recommends that the Library Director be included when a member library hosts the program to encourage that same common ground understanding between the Library Board and the Director.

The CORE Trustee Training has been designed to be an "on demand" program that can be conducted at member libraries at a date and time that is most convenient for trustees to come together. Please contact Tim Burke (e-mail - tim.burke@uhls.lib.ny.us or phone - (518) 437-9880 x222) to arrange a session for your library board.
